The LandLady

Not trust before meeting

In the Roald Dahl story "The Landlady, Billy was sent to work on the city of Bath. When he got there he found a cheap hotel called Bed and Breakfast which was owned by a woman who seemed good and careless. When he got in he found out  that the room was perfect, but he was the only visitor on the hotel. While he was talking with the woman, she asked Billy to sing the guest book, he realised that on the guest book there were only two more visitors which somehow seemed familiar to him. He didn't remember from where he noticed that names and started to make questions to the woman about them, but there was no way he could remember. While he keeped thinking of the names the woman offered him tea which tasted like bitten almonds.Billy also found out that the woman had animals perfectly preserved which make him notice that something wrong was happening. When all of the suden he began to feel bad and realised that the women was not the kind of person he thought she was.

Roland is able to show and make us understand how the characters are in a physical and emotional way because of how he uses perfectly imagery. For example,

"He was wearing a new navy-blue overcoat, a new brown trilby hat, and a new brown suit, and he was feeling fine"(1)

We can see that Billy is a young man that is using new cloths, who is coming for work and because of how he is described we can see that he is a good person.

Using the sense of smell, Roland is able to make us feel what Billy was feeling on that moment. For example when Billy started to feel a strange smell coming out.

"Now and again, he caught a whiff of a peculiar smell that seemed to emanate directly from her person. It was not in the least unpleasant, and it reminded him—well, he wasn’t quite sure what it reminded him of. Pickled walnuts? New leather? Or was it the corridors of a hospital?"(7)

This story really cap the readers attention because of the interesting suspense the story has.We can learn from this story that we should not trust everyone that seems nice before really knowing the person. As we see we are not able to know what happened to Billy but we can infer that he was killed and preserved as the animals and the two more visitors.
